LANDFORMS

VALLEY

  • A valley is a low area between hills or mountains that typically has a stream.
  • An example would be Death Valley in California and Nevada.

PLAIN

  • A plain is a large and flat area with few trees.
  • An example would be the Great Plains in the U.S.

REEF

  • A ridge of jagged rock, sand, or coral just below the surface.
  • An example is Glover's Reef by Belize.

PLATEAU

  • An area of relatively flat land.
  • Kukenan Tepuy in Venezuela is an example.

ISLAND

  • Land that is completely surrounded by water.
  • An example is Hawaii.

RIVER

  • A large, natural stream flowing through a channel to more water.
  • An example is the Kansas River.

LAKE

  • A large body of water surrounded by land.
  • An example is Shawnee Lake

MOUNTAIN

  • A large, natural elevation of the Earth's surface.
  • An example is Mt. McKinley in Alaska.

STRAIT

  • A narrow passage of water connecting two bodies of water.
  • An example is Agate Pass in Puget Sound

PENNINSULA

  • A piece of land almost surrounded by water.
  • An example is Florida.

ISTHMUS

  • A narrow strip of land connecting two areas of land.
  • An example is Panama.

ARCHIPELAGO

  • A group of islands.
  • An example is the Hawaiian Islands.

CANYON

  • A deep gorge, typically one with a river flowing through it.
  • An example is the Grand Canyon in Arizona.

DELTA

  • A triangular tract of sediment deposited at the mouth of a river.
  • An example is where the Mississippi flows into the Gulf of Mexico.

GULF

  • A deep inlet of the sea almost surrounded by land.
  • An example is the Gulf of Mexico.
