FACTS ABOUT FRANCE

  • The law is a civil legal system. There is two types of laws private and public law.

THE MAIN RELIGIONS IN FRANCE

  • Roman Catholic 83-88%
  • Protestant 2%
  • Jewish 1%
  • Muslim 5-10%
  • Unaffiliated 4%

THE RELIGIOUS LAW IN 1905 IN FRANCE

  • France had created a law in 1905 of French Law on the Separation of the Churches and the State.
  • The law means that the government prohibit from recognizing, salarying, or subsiding any religion.
  • The law affected all religions in France.

FRANCE'S HISTORY WITH MUSLIMS

  • After the agreement of Briand-Ceretti, which had weaken Separation of State and Church, the French Government could subsidize Muslim prayer rooms and the formation of imams.
  • The government tried to convince Muslim population to integrate into French society.
  • In 2011, the French government decided to ban the headdresses of Muslim religious symbols, such as the Islamic female headscarf.
  • This caused some minor protests on the streets.
