  • He is a black and white dog.
  • He is a Border Collie.
  • She can't find a home to stay in at first.

  • Character trait brave.
  • Quote 1; "Mother and Bone were fast asleep, but I wanted
  • to know what was outside. I crept off of the burlap sacks and 
  • across the shed to the open door. pg,21
  • This quote shows that Squirrel as a puppy wants to be brave.

  • "Instead , feeling braver with a companion at my side, I led Moon through
  • the woods to the row of houses and we raided the garbage cans there 
  • after all". pg67
  • This quote shows that Squirrel is the bravest when someone else is 
  • with him.

  • Quote 3; "Never before had we walked directly down the main street of 
  • Claremmont, not during the day and not during the night. But not a 
  • single person was about, so we felt more free than usual". pg99
  • This quote shows that again that he is brave when he has other people 
  • around him.

  • Early the next morning Mother left the shed and trotted off in the 
  • direction of the garbage heap. She never came back". (p25)
  • This quote shows that as a puppy he thought he belonged then 
  • his mother left him.

  • "That night after the supermarket had closed, Moon and I waited
  • cautiously between our Dumpsters. The women arrived , put out our food 
  • and left". (p106)
  • This quote shows that he and Moon belong together.

  • Theme is still belonging.
  • "Remember when I said the last thing I needed was a dog? Well, that wasn't
  • true, of course. I do need you, and I'm glad you're here." We're sitting 
  • side by side on the couch when she says this and I slide into Susan's lap" 
  • This quote shows that Squirrel finally finds where he belongs.
