SAHARA DESERT

  • Worlds hottest desert
  • Worlds third largest desert
  • Winds can reach hurricane level and give rise to sand storms, dust devils.
  • There's little water or vegetation to sustain life in most part of the Sahara.

MADAGASCAR

  • Madagascar is the world's fourth largest island
  • It has a mountainous central plateau and coastal plains.
  • Agriculture: Coffee, vanilla, sugarcane, cloves; livestock products
  • Scientists think it broke off of Africa 160 million years ago

NILE RIVER

  • regarded as the longest river in the world
  • Around 40 million people live in the Nile Delta region.
  • 22% of the Nile’s course runs through Egypt.
  • the Nile creates a fertile green valley across the desert.

ATLAS MOUNTAINS

  • They span across three countries:Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia.
  • The highest point is Jbel Toubkal (13,671 feet)
  • Mostly grassland and no trees.
  • The Atlas Mountains contain a wide variety of mineral deposits

LAKE CHAD

  • Large, shallow, endorheic lake in Africa
  • It shrank as much as 95% from about 1963 to 1998
  • Freshwater lake
  • Its surface area varies greatly by season

HORN OF AFRICA

  • A peninsula in East Africa
  • Inhabited by roughly 100 million people
  • 1 in 5 children are severely malnourished in this region
  • 30% of the overall population has access to safe water

  • Also known as the Canaries
  • Derived from Latin meaning "Island of the Dogs"
  • Ancient people worshipped dogs on the islands
  • Spanish archipelago located just off the northwest coast of mainland
  • Africa

NAMIB DESERT

  • Coastal desert in Southern Africa
  • The name Namib is of Nama origin and means vast place
  • Stretches for more than 2,000 kilometres along the Atlantic coasts
  • Almost completely uninhabited by humans except for
  • several small settlements
