The definition of a "Renaissance Man"

WHY IS SHAKESPEARE A RENAISSANCE MAN?

  • While he was alive, he did many great things and had different jobs.
  • He was a poet, actor, and playwright.
  • He cared about his work, when people before the renaissance didn't.
  • The quote "Better three hours too soon than a minute too late." Shows his respect for his work

BASIC INFORMATION ABOUT SHAKESPEARE

  • His birthdate is unknown, but he was baptized on April 26, 1564
  • He lived in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire, England.
  • He worked at (and built) the Golden Globe theater in 1599
  • Little is known of Shakespeare's personal life and religion.
  • He was born under rule of Elizabeth I, who was Protestant and outlawed Catholicism.

SHAKESPEARE'S ACHIEVEMENTS

  • He wrote 38 plays, Hamlet being one if the most famous, even today.
  • He also wrote over 150 sonnets.
  • One of the first poems that Shakespeare wrote was called The Rape of Lucrece.
  • Shakespeare built the Golden Globe theatre in 1599, where his plays were performed.

ROMEO AND JULIET

  • Another one of his most famous plays that is still popular today.

SHAKESPEARE'S HUMANISM

  • Humanism is the study of humans and building on the human race.
  • His work on the Globe Theater showed his humanism by making a place for people to see plays.
  • He shows humanism by putting great effort in his work and pushing forward how people thought of plays.

SHAKESPEARE'S EFFECT ON THE MODERN WORLD

  • The things he wrote are still inspiring entertainment today, the Globe Theater is still being used today.
  • Many actors still perform Shakespeare's plays.
  • His quotes are famous and people still use them today. Some examples are:
  • "Better three hours too soon than a minute too late."
  • "A fool thinks himself to be wise, but a wise man knows himself to be a fool."
