PRESENCE OF VIOLENCE

  • Nonviolent protests ended with police forces
  • Penalties included arrest, fines, whippings
  • Sharpville Massacre
  • Protesters didnt carry passbooks
  • Governemnt called emegency, 69 injured 187 wounded

PRESENCE OF A LEADER

  • Nelson Mandela was a true leader
  • Even while imprisoned, he tried to accomplish his dream
  • He gave up his own freedom for the freedom of his people
  • When he was released, he knew that what he had to do was eliminate apartheid without
  • He knew that the key was not hate but love (nonviolence) and that anyone could love if they can hate

NELSON MANDELAS PRESIDENCY

  • Served one term from 1994-1999 and was 75 when he came into office
  • Encouraged indigenous africans to support the Springbooks
  • SA National Rugby Team, led by an Afrikaner captain who Mandela presented the trophy to
  • Major step in reconcilliation for the white and black South Africans
  • Shared a Nobel Peace Prize with F.W De Klerk

WHAT MADE NONVIOLENCE WORK

  • The government couldn't do anything since the natives werent retaliating
  • They had a strong and selfless leader to follow
  • The fact that the government kept on using violence and the natives didnt brought attention to the world
  • Hurt South Africa economically and forced them to give equal rights to the natives
  • Protesters saying they are just as good a man as a white person
