2) All of the European settled areas were governed by these institutions. There are examples of illegal institutions such as the King of the Mosquitoes and Palmares in Brazil but these are unusual. Castas (non-European people, either mixed or non-mixed) were excluded from government service except for a few town councils or cabildos. Caciques (Indian leaders) did serve on occasion.

Migrants born in Europe was known as peninsulares, stood at the top of the social hierarchy in Spanish America. They were followed by Creoles or Criollos, which were individuals who were born in the Americas of Iberian parents. Mestizos were first not considered essential to the society, however, as time went by, they grew rapidly in population and proved to be a big contributer to the community. Those of the lower class, like slaves and the conquered peoples were imported by the Iberian colonies.

Although the Portuguese sailors stayed for only nine days, the indigenous people soon became fascinated by the iron tools used, the Catholic mass service observance and the alcoholic beverages that they observed. Because of this perceived interest in the Roman Catholic religion, the Portuguese assumed that these ones would quickly convert to Christianity once educated.

Since the europeans built and cultivated the land of the Americas on capitalism, the natives were enslaved, in which the europeans forced the natives to cooperate with them. They didn't just learn to farm, and they didn't just trade. The reason for this is because the european explorers saw the natives as inferiors, and an obstacle on land that they had found in the name of the three G's.

6. The Treaty of Tordesillas was an agreement between Portugal and Spain on the newly explored land. Spanish-born Pope, Alexander VI issued a law stating that Spain was given rights to all newly discovered and undiscovered lands on the west side of the line. Also, that Portuguese expeditions were to keep to the east of the line. Neither power was given the right to occupy any territory already in the hands of a Christian ruler.
