DESETIFICATION

BY: NUBERIA BARTHELL, GRECIA MEDINA, AND ALYSSA MANN

Desertification is the changing of a grassland area to a deserty type of area.

HOW DID DESERTIFICATION EVER BECOME AN ISSUE?

  • Many areas in the world started to become constantly hot and dry with soil erosion and land degradation.
  • Those areas have transformed into desert areas, therefore their earlier plant and animal life can't sustain once the area transfers.

HOW LONG HAS DESERTIFICATION BEEN AN ISSUE?

  • Since 2000
  • More than a third of the human population has been affected by desertification

WHERE IS THE ISSUE LOCATED, GEOGRAPHICALLY?

WHAT ANIMALS DOES DESERTIFICATION AFFECT AND HOW?

Desertification causes less adapted plants to die, resulting in a reduced biodiversity; this causes animals to die, since their usual food was replaced by other food sources which they cannot digest. The animals being affected are the animals that once lived in that area before the transformation because the animals who once lived there were born to adapt to that area. When you change an animal's habitat, it's hard for them to adapt.

WHAT PLANTS DOES DESERTIFICATION AFFECT?

  • Loosened soil buries plants and leaves their roots exposed. Also when overgrazing occurs, plant species may be lost which can cause a famine then plants wouldn't be able to fully grow.

HOW ARE HUMANS AFFECTED?

  • Soil becomes less usable meaning less availability for agriculture
  • Causes many famines
  • Food supply is lost
  • Causes flooding for people who live near the area

HOW WILL DESERTIFICATION EFFECT THE ENTIRE WORLD?

  • Our food supply with animals would get worst.
  • Our food supply with plants would eventually also die out.
  • We would die of starvation.

HOW ARE WE, AS HUMANS, TRYING TO "FIX" DESERTIFICATION, IF AT ALL?

  • You can go to local global scales and donate money to help.
  • Go and just help physically

PROBABLE TIMELINES V.S. PREFERABLE TIMELINES

  • I prefer for desertification to stop.
  • Desertification would more than likely continue , eventually taking over all the grasslands in the world.
  • I prefer for animals to be able to adapt to the desert habitat, so they can live and one part of our food supple would not die.
  • Animals were born to survive what they can survive, they can't change unless God would changes it. So more than likely, animals would die during desertification.

ARE THERE ANY PARTICULAR AREAS OF LIFE WHERE THE DIFFERENCES ARE MOST MARKED?

  • China
  • Africa
  • U.S.

WHAT ARE OUR GLOOMIEST FORECASTS FOR THE FUTURE RELATED TO DESERTIFICATION?

  • Desertification would spread across the world
  • We would all go extinct because of the lack of plants and animals.

WHAT WOULD THE EARTH LOOK LIKE, FUTURE WISE IF OUR PREFERABLE TIMELINES WERE REALIZED?

  • We would basically live in a perfect world, where our food supply never runs out and we basically are able to live forever based off of food.
