Figurative Language

MLK used many different examples of figurative language in his speech. I have chosen 2 different examples to elaborate on.

Example #1

The Dark & Desolate

Valley Of Segregation

I Believe this is an example of a metaphor.
It Is comparing a dark, desolate valley to Segregation.

The Impact of this piece of figurative language is you get a look at how segregation really was. The metaphor provides the idea that segregation, was dark, low, flat, hard to survive, and seemingly endless.

Example #2

"The Curvaceous Slopes

of California"

I believe this piece of figurative language is an example of Imagery. Hearing this immediately put the image of rolling hills in my mind.

The Impact of this imagery is to show where freedom spread. It describes one of the areas where freedom "rang".
