EXPANDING ROME

  • Organization was necessary to expand Rome
  • 264 B. C. - Rome intervened the Carthaginians
  • This started the first Punic war
  • Since the Romans were farmers, they had no ships
  • They decided to capture a ship, and build replicas of it

PRACTICAL

TREATING THE CONQUERED LANDS

  • Rome conquered many lands and were practical in dealing with them
  • Conquered people (except slaves) were allowed to keep their religion
  • The only thing they owed was an annual payment and to house army
  • The Roman army would build a road leading back to Rome
  • This began the saying, "All Roads Lead To Rome."

DISCIPLINED

LAWS

  • All laws were enforced in a strict manner
  • No mercy was shown, no matter the commiters situation
  • Romans held pride in being unsentimental and brutal
  • Their laws were not built off of God's laws
  • Ex: falling asleep on duty was punishable by death
