  • Feed typicaly grabbed by toung and chewed in mouth then swallowed

RUMEN

  • The largest part of the stomach system
  • In cattle this can hold up to 50 gallons

RETICULORUMEN

  • A small pouch located on the side of the rumen
  • Its use is to catch forign materials eaten by the animal
  • This is a combination of the rumen and the reticulum
  • Can hold five gallons if liquid

OMASUM

  • Known as manyplies
  • Absorbs water from the chyme
  • Can vary in size

ABOMASUM

  • The true stomach
  • Contains high levels of acid
  • Differs in position by the fullness in other parts of the stomach

GRAIN OVERLOAD

  • Common in feed lot cattle when introduced to heavy grain diet quickly
  • Most common in cattle that gain access to large quantities of Grain

BEYOND STOMACH

  • Stomach- produces about three quarts of acid daily
  • Gallbladder- releases bile salts which helps small intestine break down foods
  • Small intestine- absorption of nutrients (20 times legnth of animal)
  • Large intestine- absorbs most liquids and some remaining nutrients
