  • Arranged marriage at 15 years old
  • Set to marry Louis XVII, to improve the relationship with France
  • France was a very powerful nation at this time (pre-revolution)

1774: Marries Louis XVII

  • People loved Marie Antionette
  • Beautiful, young, fresh

Unhappy Marriage

  • Marie was very social
  • She loved art, fashion, dance, and the nightlife

  • Louis XVII was very different..
  • He enjoyed being quiet and alone
  • Choosing to hunt over going to a party

Gossip starts..

  • Many gossiped about Marie Antoinette
  • Some said they spent no time together
  • They had separate bedrooms
  • Others said she was unable to have children

The Diamond Necklace Affiar

The Diamond Necklace

  • Very expensive neckalce with many large diamonds
  • Accused of defrauding the royal jewelers
  • Marie discouraged Louis from buying the necklace
  • Jeanne de Lamotte Valois devised a plan..
  • She even wrote letters and hired a women to dress like her
Was originally created for Louis XV, but when he died before he could purchase it, they hoped that Louis XIV would purchase it for Marie Antoinette. However, she told him to to buy it as it was a frivolous expense.

The Diamond Necklace Affiar

  • Cardinal de Rohan purchased the necklace
  • However, when the first payment was due he could not afford it
  • The jewelers demanded money from Marie Antoinette
  • Although she had no knowledge of the purchase, many blamed her
  • More reason to dislike Marie Antionette

  • She was a foreigner, Austrian
  • Reputation of overspending, infidenity, etc.
  • Scandalous pamphlets were printed
  • Her work with orphanages and hospitals was ignored

She became a symbol of excess, and was therefore hated by the poor.

October 1789: A mob marches on Versailles, forcing them to move to Austria

They are apprehended and carried back to Paris

Constitution of 1791

  • Louis is forced to accept this
  • Reducing him to a mere figurehead

Monarchy is abolished by the National Convention

August 1792: The royal couple is arrested and imprisioned
