In September of 1836 elections texans wanted to be annexed by the U.S. And have U.S protection and they have strong cultural ties to the U.S.
The U.S. Did not want to annex Texas if it meant damage to Mexico's relations

When Houston was president the debt was $1.25million congress tried to raise money with imported goods,property taxes,business taxes,and land title fees. They were difficult to collect and the government spent more money than they collected. By the end of Houston's first term the debt was $2 million.
