  • Enlightenment political theorist.
  • Married Abigail Adams.
  • Never owned a slave.
  • Went to Harvard at age 16.

PRESIDENCY

  • In office March 4, 1797-March 4,1801.
  • Ran against Alexander Hamilton.
  • Thomas Jefferson was his Vice President.
  • Succeeded by Thomas Jefferson.

  • Secretary of state John Marshall.
  • Marshall was among kne of the midnight judges.

PROGRAM

  • Alien and Sedition Acts - 1798
  • Allowed the President to imprison dangerous aliens.
  • When Jefferson was elected he let the acts expire.
  • The act was denounced by Democratic-Republicans.
