  • was an iron monger
  • worked with tin miners
  • created steam engine to pump water out of the mines

  • engine was installed in Dudley castle coal mine in 1712
  • the engines were reliable, but inefficient
  • had about 5.5 horsepower
  • very expensive

  • condensed steam made a vacuum
  • vacuum pulled water up
  • the water then boiled and created steam
  • water condensed pulling down on a lever
  • lever pulled on other objects
