James Edward Oglethorpe was a British general, Member of Parliament, philanthropist, and the founder of the colony of Georgia. As a social reformer, he hoped to resettle Britain's poor, especially those in debtors' prisons, in the New World
It had been more than 50 years since the British had established a new colony. James Oglethorpe created a charter to settle a new colony and named it Georgia in honor of King George II.
The various swampy areas made Georgia, and the Southern colonies, perfect for farming, growing, and producing rice. Running through Georgia were the Ogeechee, Savannah, and Altamaha rivers. Also running through Georgia were mountains, and in South East Georgia, there were flat lands where they would hunt deer, bison, and beaver.
Georgia was very open to different religions. Georgia let all religions, natives, protestant, and even various African religions, in. The only two religions that Georgia strictly prohibited was Catholic and Judaism.
