INDIAN REMOVAL ACT OF1830

  • Native American tribes moved from their land to the west
  • Non-natives were eager to claim the "new land"
  • The five civilized tribes and many christians protested

THE FIVE CIVILIZED TRIBES

  • Seminole - Florida, Oklahoma
  • Cherokee - Georgia, North and South Carolina
  • Chickasaw - Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi
  • Choctaw - Mississippi, Alabama
  • Creek - Georgia, Florida, S. Carolina, Alabama

PROTESTS

  • Some tribes tried to use the law keep their land
  • Over 1600 signed petitions against the seizing of their land
  • The natives were ignored and forced out anyway
  • They were forced to march over 1,200 miles
  • Their homes were abandoned, and were often looted by white settlers

ON THE TRAIL

  • Whooping cough, typhus, and many other illnesses
  • They faced starvation and dehydration
  • Almost 5000 native americans died as a result of their journey
  • Once they reached the west, they had to build their lives from scratch

AFTERMATH

  • By 1837, 46,000 Native Americans had been removed from their land
  • 25 million acres of land was left to be claimed by white settlers
  • The land was mainly used as cotton plantations
  • The natives were promised the land they settled on after relocating
  • When it was signed as a state, the Native Americans land was gone forever
