WHAT IS DEPRESSION?

  • Depression is a feeling that interferes with your daily life and causes pain for you and loved ones.
  • Depression is a serious illness that is also common.

WHAT CAUSES DEPRESSION?

  • Depression is caused most likely by combination of genetic, biological, environmental and psychological factors.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF DEPRESSION?

  • Major depression
  • Persistent depressive disorder
  • Psychotic depression
  • Postpartum depression
  • Seasonal affective disorder (SAD)
  • Bipolar disorder

SYMPTOMS OF DEPRESSION

  • Loss of interest in hobbies or activities that was once pleasurable
  • Thoughts of suicide and attempts at suicide
  • Feeling of hopelessness
  • Insomnia ( sleeping too much or not sleeping enough )
  • Mostly feeling sad or "empty" feeling
  • Eating too much or appetite loss
  • Less energetic and fatigue

WHO IS AT RISK?

  • One of the most common mental disorder in the United States is major depressive disorder
  • 6.7% of U.S adults experience major depressive disorder each year
  • Men are less likely to experience major depressive disorder during their lifetime, women are 70% more likely to experience it

TREATMENTS FOR DEPRESSION

  • Medication (antidepressants)
  • Psychotherapy
  • Electroconvulsive therapy (shock therapy)
