NGU

Nongonococcal Urethritis

What is NGU?
NGU is an inflammation of the urethra that is caused by chlamyida.

Causes of NGU:
NGU is a complication of the bacterial infection Chlamydia. If Chlamydia is not treated urethra may become infected.


Although chlamydia is a common infection in both men and women, NGU is mostly found infecting men.

Symptoms in Men

  • Discharge from the penis
  • Burning or pain when urinating
  • Itching, tenderness, or irritation
  • Stains

Symptoms in Women

  • Discharge from the vagina
  • Burning or pain when urinating
  • Abdominal pain or abnormal vaginal blood

TREATMENTS

  • Main treatments are: Azithromycin & Doxycycline (antibiotics)
  • Take all meds
  • Treat all partners/inform all partners
  • Abstain from sex until all partners are treated

COMPLICATIONS

  • Most common complication is persistent urethritis (reoccurring inflammation)
  • Reactive arthritis
  • PID

60% of untreated chlamydia cases develop into NGU
