IMPORTANT RULES

  • Eyes have to be drawn in profile
  • Arms and shoulders have to be drawn as seen from the front
  • Important people are drawn bigger than others
  • Could be written left to right or right to left
  • Uses no punctuation or spaces between words

FACTS

  • A writing system that uses pictures to stand for words or sounds
  • First use of the word "hieroglyphics" was in 1586
  • The eye of Horus is very famous
  • The Rosetta Stone was found in 1799-used to crack hieroglyphics
  • A single picture can stand for a whole word

FACTS CONTINUED

  • Used on tablets, temple walls, and papyrus reed
  • Mainly used to make lists of workers or supplies for making a pyramid
  • Scribes and priests did most of the writing
  • Did this because most people in Ancient Egypt couldn't read or write

The word comes from two Greek words meaning "sacred writing". This came from the Egyptians own word meaning "divine speech".
