SLATED

FICTION (SUB GENRE: SCI-FI)

TERI TERRY

  • Teri was born in France.
  • She writes young adult and children's books.
  • She has lived in France, Australia, Canada, and England.

CHARACTERS (THERE IS A LOT)

  • Kyla- Main character and a 16 year old girl, who has been slated. Even though her mind was erased, she still remembers bits and pieces of memories of who she was in the past.
  • Ben- Kyla's extremely close friend, who has also been slated; therefore, Kyla and Ben are in it together.

MORE CHARACTERS

  • Parents- Kyla's guardians aren't technically her birth parents, since Kyla has been slated she can't be returned to her birth parents, therefore she was adopted after she got out of the hospital from being slated.

More characters: Amy- Kyla's sister, who has also been slated, but she got her levo taken off because she was over 21. (A levo is a device attached to a slateds arm which cannot be taken off until they're 21. What it does is it has numbers on it based off how you're feeling. The lower the number goes, you could die from it if it ever goes to 0. You're practically forced to be happy and/or to not make any mistakes.)

MORE CHARACTERS

  • Lorders: Lorders are people who erase your mind (slates you) if you are a criminal or if you did something bad.

MORE CHARACTERS

  • Dr. Lysander- Kyla's doctor who she goes to every Saturday to make sure everything is alright with Kyla and her levo.

MORE CHARACTERS

  • Mr. Gianelli- Kyla's art teacher at school, but he was taken by Lorders and nobody knew what he did wrong.

MORE CHARACTERS

  • Jazz: Amy's boyfriend.
  • Mac: Jazz's cousin.
  • Aiden: Mac's friend who helped Kyla figure out who she was and what her name was before she was slated.

More characters: Phoebe- Bully towards Kyla because she's been slated, but at the same time cares about Kyla even though she acts like she doesn't. Later on in the book, Phoebe was slated, and was never brought up in the story afterwards.

THE PROTAGONIST WAS KYLA AND BEN BECAUSE THEY BOTH WERE SLATED AND JUST WANTED FREEDOM SENSE THEY HAD LEVOS ATTRACTED TO THEIR ARM THAT MAKES THEM NOT REALLY BE WHO THEY ARE WITHOUT THEIR LEVO NUMBER GOING DOWN. THE ANTAGONIST WAS THE LORDERS BECAUSE THEY PUT THE LEVOS ON THEM AND DIDN'T CARE ABOUT WHAT KYLA AND BEN WANTED EVEN IF THEY DIDN'T DESERVE BEING SLATED.

SETTINGS

  • The woods.
  • Group that Ben and Kyla had to go to.
  • School.
  • Hospital.
  • Mac's house.
  • London.

EXTERNAL CONFLICT

THE CONFLICT IS EXTERNAL BECAUSE BEN WANTED TO REMOVE HIS LEVO WITH THE SHARPEST TOOLS HE COULD FIND BECAUSE IT IS POSSIBLE, BUT KYLA DISAGREED AND TRIED TO STOP HIM BECAUSE IT'S MOST LIKELY HE COULD DIE FROM TRYING.

THE SUMMARY OF THIS BOOK IS KYLA AND BEN ARE BOTH SLATED. THEY BOTH DON'T KNOW WHO THEY WERE BEFORE BUT KYLA WOULD REMEMBER MEMORIES OF HER PAST EVEN THOUGH HER MIND WAS ERASED. SHE FOUND OUT HER NAME USED TO BE LUCY CONNOR, AND BITS OF WHAT SHE DID BEFORE SHE WAS SLATED. HER BIRTH PARENTS REPORTED HER MISSING, EVEN THOUGH SHE WAS ALSO A CRIMINAL. AFTER SHE WAS SLATED HER NAME WAS CHANGED TO KYLA DAVIS. SHE WAS COMPLETELY A NEW PERSON AND HER PAST DIDN'T COME BACK. NOW WITH HER AND BEN BOTH BEING SLATED THEY'VE BEEN ALWAYS AT EACH OTHER'S SIDE.

The climax of this book is about Ben wanting to remove his levo. He did it and then it had failed so he had to go to the hospital. There is no resolution in this book because it's a series of three books. It left me on a cliffhanger about if Ben was dead or not. So in the next book called "Fractured" it has the resolution in the beginning, which will be my next book talk.

THE POINT OF VIEW IS FIRST PERSON POINT OF VIEW BECAUSE THE STORY IS TOLD THROUGH KYLA.

The theme to this book is that Kyla and I both know what's right and wrong even though she's been slated.

AUTHORS POINT

The authors point is to learn from your mistakes.

My favorite part was when Kyla and Ben would go run and talk together in the woods because there was no suspense or sad parts.
