BRIEF HISTORY- HOLOCAUST

  • Adolf Hitler led a group he recognized as Nazis, short for National Socialism.
  • Those who didn't fit Hitlers ideal vision of perfect were sent to death camps.
  • Jews had their rights stolen from them, and has to wear a yellow star.
  • Not only were Jewish people affected, but so were Gypsies, Homosexuals & Christians/Catholics

LOCATION OF MEMORIAL

  • Berlin, Germany
  • Near to Brandenburg Gate , when Hitler was "promoted to chancellor. He held his first propaganda here.
  • Information centre underneath
  • Hitler and his wife killed themselves in a spot underneath this memorial.

WHAT IS THE THEME/MESSAGE?

  • The Memorial uses ambiguity, allegory and symbolism.
  • The theme is to convey emotions of Death

HOW IT CAME TO BE

  • Peter Eisenmann was the architect of this memorial & it was dedicated May 10,2005.
  • Lea Rosh (Publisher) had the idea of this memorial to be placed in Berlin.
  • They had a competition in 1994 for a design, did not win approval.
  • Over 800 Design entries. Won jurisdiction by German government in 1999.
  • Construction started in 2003.

WHY DOES IT STILL MATTER ?

  • There were more than six million of people affected during the Holocaust.
  • It shows that we honor/respect those who were abused & taken advantage of.
  • The memorial is an apology to the Jews for the atrocities Germany committed.
