A long time ago people lived in the dark. They were scared of the Taniwha in the lake.

Once there was a warrior called Tamarereti. He woke up hungry and went to catch some fish in the lake called Taupo.

After catching 3 big fish the wind died down. He thought that having a nap was a good idea.

While he was asleep the wind blew him to the other side of the lake. Still hungry he made a fire and cooked his catch.

He tried thinking of how to get home without the Taniwha eating him. by the lake he saw some pebbles shining in the light of his fire.

He collected as many pebbles as he could and while paddling in the lake, he chucked the pebbles into the night sky.

Tamarereti made it safely back home and is how the stars got into the sky. This made Ranginui, the god of the sky, very happy.
