HISTORY
Construction on a prototype started on June 4th 1981.
Construction on Columbia began on March 27, 1975.

WHEN DID IT HAPPEN?
February 1, 2003

WHAT HAPPENED?
On re-entry to earth, the Columbia caught on fire
and soon exploded 16 minutes from the time it was
supposed to land.

HOW MANY DIED?
Seven people died during this tragedy.

WHAT CAUSED IT?
A piece of foam insulation broke off from the
Columbia's external tank and struck the left wing.
When the Shuttle reentered the atmosphere, the damage
allowed hot gases to penetrate and destroy the internal
wing, which caused it to become unstable and slowly break apart.

Somewhere above Texas and Louisiana, on its way
to land at Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

THE CHALLENGER

HISTORY
After its first flight in April 1983, Challenger quickly
became the workhorse of NASA's Space Shuttle fleet,
flying far more missions per year than Columbia. In
1983 and 1984, Challenger flew on 85%
of all Space Shuttle missions.

It disintegrated 73 seconds into its flight.
Disintegration of the began after an O-ring seal
in its right solid rocket booster failed at liftoff.
