MANIFEST DESTINY AND MEXICAN-AMERICAN WAR

MANIFEST DESTINY

  • The US gained current day Utah, Nevada, and California
  • Parts of various other states were also surrendered in the Treaty of Guadelupe
  • Texas was also gained, but they were their own country for a little bit of time.
  • Opportunities available for immigrants: religious freedom, economic opportunity
  • Railroads got things farther distances faster than horses

WAR

  • Advantages: most people were eager to join; better weapons
  • Cont.: navy was bigger and better trained; good military commanders
  • Key victories included the Battle of Buena Vista,
  • Cont.: the. Battle of Contreras, the Siege of Veracruz,
  • Cont.: the Battle of Churubusco

NATIVE AMERICANS

  • Laws passed: the Government Trading act
  • Cont.: the Indian Removal Act, the Dawes Act etc
  • The natives did not react well to any of these, but they were outnumbered
  • The U.S. bullied them off their land and killed thousands of them
  • The Trail of Tears killed one in four of the Natives who walked it.
