PRESENTATION OUTLINE

ISABELLA

LOVE

LOVE OF GOD

  • "Yes, truly. I speak not as desiring more,
  • but rather wishing a more strict restraint,
  • upon the sisterhood votarists of st Clare
  • Act 2, Scene 4
  • "Then, Isabelle, live chaste, and, brother, die."

EXPLAINATION:

  • Literary term - caesurae:
  • The caesurae creates breaks in the sentence, with emphasises the
  • contrast between the lives of the two siblings. The suggestion that
  • Isabella will live 'chaste' juxtaposes with her brother who will 'die',
  • possibly referring to orgasm.

NARCISSISM

  • "More than our brother is
  • our chastity"
  • Act 2, Scene 4

EXPLANATION

  • Half rhyme between "die" & "chastity"
  • Thinks her honour is more important than his life

LOVE OF FAMILY

  • And "better it were a brother die at once,
  • than that a sister, by redeeming him,
  • should die forever"

EXPLANATION

  • Lots of hard sounds "better", "brother", "died" and "redeemed"
  • create a harsh tone, reflective of Isabella's situation.
