Henri Matisse December 31, 1869 - November 3, 1954 In 1941 Matisse was diagnosed with cancer and following surgery, started using a wheelchair. With the use of assistants, Matisse started creating cut-outs.
His assistants would paint sheets of white paper and he would cut out colored shapes and place them onto paper to create illustrations.
