WHAT IS PARKINSON'S

  • It's a slowly progressing disease that affects the motor muscles
  • Symptoms are trembling arms, legs, and face.
  • Stiffness of limbs, slowed movement, and postural instability

WHAT ARE THE CHANCES OF GETTING IT?

  • An average person has a 1-2% chance to get Parkinson's
  • Over 1 million people have been diagnosed in America
  • 50,000 people are diagnosed each year in America alone.
  • People with certain genetic mutations also have an increased risk

WHAT CAUSES PARKINSON'S DISEASE

  • The cause is unknown.
  • Scientists think that an imbalance of chemicals in the brain could cause Parkinson's
  • There is a slight genetic factor, if you are related to someone with PD, you're at risk
  • Men are more at risk than women
  • Older people are more likely to get it

WHATS GOING WRONG?

  • Death of dopamine-generating cells in the Substantia Nigra part of the brain
  • This makes nerves fire wrong
  • Cause not yet known

CAN WE TREAT IT?

  • Current treatments are taking levodopa combined with carbidopa
  • Carbidopa protects the levodopa until it reaches the brain
  • The brain uses levodopa to make dopamine
  • No known cure.

QUALITY OF LIFE

  • The affected could have the shakes, tremors, slow movement, and stiffness
  • These make it hard to walk or go out in public
  • Depression is also high in patients.
