PRESENTATION OUTLINE

THE AMERICAN SYSTEM

BY PEYTON DESCHUTTER

In a nutshell, the American System is an economic system proposed by Henry Clay where the North manufactures, the West farms/provides the food, and the South provides raw resources. The three main components of the American System were high tariffs, the Erie Canal/transportation revolution, and the Second Bank of the United States.

The North benefited the most from this system. The tariffs protected industry from foreign competition, and with all the canals and transportation, they could easily transport and sell manufactured goods throughout the country. Men and women also have distinct jobs here.

The West had some benefits, but not as many as the North. They didn't like the tariffs, but the population boom in the North and West made it so that more food was needed, so they benefited with transporting and selling their food across the country. Some adopted Indian traits, so everyone considered the West uncivilized.

The South was the least benefited in the system. The high tariffs made exports way more expensive, so although cotton could be sold in Europe for a premium price, they wouldn't get a profit due to the tariffs. They were forced to buy North American made goods. They opposed paying for transportation and canals. They strongly opposed the tariffs as well.

Overall, the American System was no half bad. For the country, it was a good idea. Some areas just benefited more than others.
