PRESENTATION OUTLINE
DHARAVI, GEOGRAPHICALLY
- Slum in central Mumbai
- One of the highest population densities in the world
- Probably stage 2 in demographic transition, high growth, not very civilized
- Pandemics such as cholera, polio, or leprosy possibly active
- HIV often diffused to area through chemical or human waste
DHARAVI, NOT JUST ANOTHER SLUM
- Like a mini city with places of worship, school, businesses, it has everything
- Worth 10 BILLION dollars, a real estate dream
- Full with people aspiring to be greater in life, wanting to fulfill their dreams
- People proud to be part of Dharavi
- Appears as a slum, but produces ONE MILLION DOLLARS EVERY DAY
DON'T JUDGE A BOOK BY IT'S COVER
IT HAS A RAG PICKING BUSINESS
KIDS WHO WANT TO BE SCIENTISTS
ADULTS WANTING TO BE ACTORS
DHARAVI IS A SIGN OF HOPE TO THE POOR, GIVES THEM A REASON TO LIVE
WITHOUT DHARAVI
- Millions upon millions would be on the streets
- Mumbai would lose a major economic aspect
- Poor would not have reason to live, millions would die
- Hope is lost in not only Dharavi, but other slums as well
- Waste would not be able to be reused, would pile up and pollute India
DHARAVI ON...
- My scale, needed to support India's economy, and should be kept
- City's scale, to Mumbai, it is an embarrassment, but is worth billions
- Country's scale, lot of population concentrated meaning lots of revenue
- Global scale, needs to become civilized and needs to become stage 3
