• Poe was born in Boston on Jan 19, 1809
• He was born into a family where the parents were both actors

PARENTS

• His father abandoned in 1810
• His mom, Elizabeth Hopkins Poe, died when Poe was just 3

ADOPTION

• Poe was soon adopted by John & Francis Allen
• They were both wealthy Tabacco merchants

WHERE IT STARTED

• They sent him to a grammar boarding school in Irvine
• He wrote his first poem

SCHOOL

• Poe attended the university of Virginia
• But soon left because he was humiliated and upset with Allen

PUBLISHED

• Poe published his first piece in 1827
• This is known as Tamerlane

1829

• He published:
• Al Aaraaf
• Tamerlane
• Other minor poems

POE MOVES

• In 1830 Poe moves to West Point

COURT-MARTIALED

• Poe was court martialed from West Point
• He wrote threatening letters to Allen

JOHN ALLANS DEATH

• Allan died on Feb, 28, 1829

EDITING JOB

• In 1835 Poe got a job
• He edited for the southern literary messanger

POE GETS MARRIED

• Poe marries Virginia in 1836
• She was only 13 years old

POE MOVES AGAIN

• In 1837 Poe moves to New York
• He couldn't find a job there

FIRST DETECTIVE STORY

• This was published in 1841
• Was called The murders in the Rue Morgue

THE RAVEN

• It was published in 1845
• To this day, it was one of his most popular books

VIRGINIAS DEATH

• She died in 1847
• He then engaged in 1848
• He engaged again in 1849

POE'S DEATH

• Poe died on October, 7, 1849
• He died from a unknown cause

HIS LAST WORDS

• His last words were "lord help my poor soul"
