Born: September 6, 1766 in Eaglesfield, Cumbria, United Kingdom.

He considered taking up Medicine or Law.

  • Same as RELATIVE ATOMIC MASS
  • Ratio of the average mass of an element

ATOMIC THEORY

  • Elements are made of ATOMS
  • Atoms in ine element are all the same
  • Atoms cannot be changed
  • Atoms combine in whole-number ratios
  • Atoms move around in chemical reactions

LATER LIFE

  • Atomic theory published in separate documemts
  • Completly published in 1827
  • He served as president of Lit & Fill from 1817 until his death.
  • Suffered from multiple strokes.
  • Died on July 27, 1844 in Manchester.

In honor of his work many chemists and biochemists used the unit dalton(DA) to denote one atomic mass unit.

Many of his works were perviously found in the Manchester Library, but they were damaged in WWll. Now they are found in the John Rylands Library.
