WRITING IS A MULTI-STEP PROCESS

  • Good writers use multiple drafts
  • There are no one draft wonders
  • It takes several iterations
  • Use a building block process
  • Start with an idea

WRITE A LONG SUMMARY STATEMENT

  • Capture the components of your story
  • Each component will be a paragraph
  • You will have a clear beginning and ending
  • Your middle will be 3 to 6 descriptive paragraphs

WRITE TO CREATE EMOTION

  • What feeling do you want to create?
  • Joy, Elation, Excitement
  • Somberness, Quiet, Peaceful Nervous
  • Sadness, Misery, Loneliness, Envy
  • Wide awake, Relaxed, Tired, Exurberance

WRITE EACH PARAGRAPH

  • Write about a segment or component
  • One thought per paragraph
  • Stay away from multi-object sentences
  • Tight consistent writing is powerful
  • Never fall in love with an unneeded sentence

RE-WRITE EACH PARAGRAPH

  • Write a descriptive paragraph only 3 sentences
  • Next re-write each sentence with descriptive words
  • Use expressive words to activate their imagination
  • Use modifiers Adverbs and Adjectives
  • Don't Report. You want the reader to be there with you

REVIEW YOUR CONCEPT

  • Can your 1st & last paragraphs stand alone?
  • The middle should be used to create feelings with details
  • 1st paragraph should be concise and powerful
  • If the 1st paragraph is weak the piece is dead.
  • Close must create an emotion or provoke a thought

  • Eliminate unneeded words
  • Can you use a word to replace a phrase?
