BERLIN CONFERENCE
The Berlin Conference was convened in 1884-1885.
This conference didn't allow African rulers despite the fact that it was their land.
Africa was divided without regard to ethnic groups and cultures by European nations.
By 1914, on,y Liberia and Ethiopia remained free of European control.

EUROPEAN IMPERIALISM
Africa was too difficult to take over because of diseases and the people there.
Superior technology, steamboats, and medicine helped the Europeans colonize Africa.
Imperialism started in the 1600s.

IMPERIALISTIC METHODS
Europeans worked through indirect rule.
When the colonies were established, tribes were grouped together no matter the culture that was behind them.
Europeans kept control over their colonies because of technology threat and indirect rule.
Infrastructure was the main thing Europeans did when they colonized Africa, but prevented them from a good education.
4.
END OF COLONIALISM
Most African countries gained their independce from European control due to WWII.
Civil wars broke out in almost every African nation and are still going on today.
Every country had to figure out whether they were a republic or democratic government right then and there.
Coup is a military overthrow of the government, which happened to European control.
5.
LASTING EFFECTS
Despite its history, some African countries have made progress and become more successful.
Civil wars are still happening.
Political issues and decisions are difficult to overcome due to the language differences.
There are multiple governments because of the culture and ethnic differences.
