The ban of hijabs head wear in french public shools

WHATS GOING ON?

  • In France there is a controversy about the Islamic scarf that women and girls are wearing and if they should be allowed in public schools or not
  • It is also known as l'affaire du voile (the veil affair)

ABOUT FRANCE

  • France is located in Europe and is bordered by Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, Italy and Spain
  • France is 247,367 square miles

ABOUT THE PROBLEM

  • The problem with the hijabs started on September 18, 1989 when three students were suspended for refusing to take off there hijabs

RELIGION/LANGUAGE

  • Religion: Roman Catholic(83-88%), protestant(2%), Jewish(1%), muslim(5-10%), unaffiliated(4%)
  • Language: French is the official language but German dialects, Celtic languages and gallo-romance languages are spoken to because of the countries France borders

THE HIJAB LAW

  • In 2010 a public debate arose about the full face covering and a law was passed banning it
  • The law does not impact hijab scarves but more to the full face cover up

FRENCH GOVERNMENT

  • France is a unitary state and a constitutional republical with a semi-presidential system

HOW CAN I HELP?

  • You can't really do anything now because of the law that is in place
  • But the law does come to some sort of agreement that you can wear the scarves but not full face covering

WHAT OTHER PROBLEMS ARISE IN FRANCE?

  • President François Hollande announced Wednesday that France would increase its defence budget by close to four billion euros over four years, in response to extremist threats after the Paris jihadist attacks.
