PLOT, THEME, CHARACTER, POINT OF VIEW, SETTING, & CONFLICT

😰 PLOT 😄

  • Definition: How the author arranges events to develop their basic idea
  • 5 essential parts of a plot (plot mountain): introduction, initiating incident, Rising action, climax, & Denoument
  • Example: The Plot of the movie "Labyrinth" was introduction: a daughter hates her step mom and hates brother
  • Initiating incident: the goblin king takes her baby brother, rising action: Sarah goes through labyrinth
  • Climax: reaches the castle and battles the goblin king, Denouement: Sarah gets her baby brother back

THEME

  • Definition: The controlling idea or central insight
  • Symbol, allusion, hyperbole, metaphor, simile
  • Example: "Dracula" by Bram Stroker
  • The theme for that movie is Horror

😈 CHARACTER 😇

  • Definition: Someone who figures in action or literary work
  • Two main characters: antagonist and protagonist
  • Twilight saga: Antagonist- the voltuary Protagonist- Edward & Bella Cullen
  • Types of characters: Rounded-many sides, Flat-briefly not in depth
  • Dynamic-many sided change for better or worse, Static-Stereotypes

POINT OF VIEW

  • Definition: The perspective from which the story is being told
  • First person- the protagonist "I", Second person- "you"
  • Third person- using a narrator, innocent eye- child's perspective
  • Omniscient- all knowing, limited omniscient- knows one characters feelings
  • Stream of consciousness- lets the reader seem as if they're in the characters mind

SETTING

  • The time and place where a story occurs
  • Place: the geographical location
  • Time: when the story is taking place
  • Weather conditions, social conditions, & mood/atmosphere
  • Ex. The setting of the movie "The Blind Side" was Mississippi

CONFLICT 🔫

  • Essential to the plot. There are two types of conflict external & internal
  • External- a force outside of one's self. Internal- a struggle within one's self
  • Four kinds of conflict: Human vs. Human, Human vs. Nature
  • Human vs. Society, & Human vs. Self
  • The conflict in the movie "World War Z" was External & Human vs. Human
