LE PALAIS ROYAL

  • The Palais-Royal, originally called the Palais-Cardinal, is a palace located in the 1st arrondissement of Paris.
  • popular Palais-Royal Gardens.

WHO WAS INLOVED?

  • The current garden is somewhat smaller than originally designed in 1630 for Cardinal Richelieu due to the construction of 60 arcaded buildings on three sides of the park by Louis-Philippe d'Orléans in 1874.
  • The buildings around the garden now house restaurants, deli shops and galleries.

DATES

  • Its origins date back to the medieval period, and its present structure has evolved in stages since the 16th century.
  • It was a seat of power until king Louis moved moved to Versailles in 1682, bringing the government with him.

  • Palais royal is located on the south side of Paris.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

  • The Palais Royal was to become even more important in the early years of the eighteenth century when Louis XIV died in 1715,
  • It's one of the oldest buildings and most expansive in Paris.

FACTS

  • the national library of deposit, with a collection of more than 30,000,000 items (14 million books and publications).
  • During the revolutionary period, Philippe d'Orléans became known as Philippe Égalité and ruled.
