MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY

BY:ELIANA YAMOUNI

The progression of medicine over time has had a really large impact on the current lifespan of humans. Because we have discovered ways to manipulate chemicals and technology, we are able to discover, treat, and cure deadly diseases and illnesses, which has allowed humans to live longer.

NORTH AMERICA
Virtual Reality Therapy is a 3D technology that is used to help people with phobias get rid if their disorders by slowly introducing them to their fears through a virtual experience. The technology is being used in hospitals across the nation, and people are raving about how it has helped them get rid of their phobias. A common phobia among the average North American is the fear of flying. Virtual Reality Therapy exposes the patient to airplane flights, but they can experience it at his/her own pace. This is a much more effective method than exposing a patient to their phobia in real life because it is in a private setting, so they can feel more comfortable while getting rid of their phobia.

SOUTH AMERICA
The oral contraceptive pill is used to prevent and terminate unwanted pregnancies. It was invented by South American scientists, and is widely in use in today's society. Unwanted pregnancy is highly common, and is now extremely easy to get rid of due to contraceptive pills. If fact, about 74% of women in South America use contraceptives. Contraceptive pills have become popular all around the globe, and no matter what your opinions on the matter is, the scientists who invented on were followed by great success.

ASIA
Israeli Dr.Amit Goffer invented the ReWalk, which allows those who are paralyzed below the waist to walk. It is a robotic exoskeleton that is battery powered and rechargeable, which is very efficient. Although it has not reached its peak in discovery, it has been used by paraplegic runners to complete 10 kilometer runs, and even Claire Lomas who lit the Paralympics flame. ReWalk is giving people another chance to walk, when they thought that they never could.

EUROPE
Contact lenses are used to replace bulky eye glasses, and are used to enhance vision. They are inserted on the cornea of the eye, and are removable. Contact lenses were envisioned by Leonardo da Vinci, but were invented by German scientist René Descartes. Approximately 125 million people wear contact lenses world wide, and they have done so much to help not only Europe, but the world. Today, contact lenses are used to aid people who are nearsighted, farsighted, and even colorblind.

AUSTRALIA
The heart pacemaker was invented by Australian scientists and is an electrical pump that aids a weak heart in beating stronger. About 3 million people in the world have pacemakers, and their lives are reliant on the pacemaker pumping blood through their bodies. In 1928, a pacemaker saved the life of a stillborn infant, and has continued to gives people another chance to live a healthy life.

AFRICA
The CAT scan was invented by an African inventor and is used to X-ray a patient's body in order to observe tissue. This invention has won a Nobel Prize, and is widely used around the world.
