SETTING THE SECENE

  • Pope Gregory sat and thought of perils facing Italy
  • Rome fell to plundering invaders
  • Trade slowed and learning ceased
  • A new European civilization emerged of Greco-Roman, Germanic and Christian traditions
  • Medieval- a civilization from the Latin from the middle age.

GEOGRAPHY OF WESTERN EUROPE

  • Rome was linked to European territories
  • It had many roads and it spread classic ideas of both Christianity and the Latin language
  • Germanic people ended roman rule in the west

LOCATION

  • Europe is the second smallest land areas of the seven continents
  • It's size impacted the modern world enormously

RESOURCES

  • This region is a frontier
  • A frontier is a sparsely populated undeveloped area on the outskirts of a civilization
  • The region had rich soil which better suited for raising and growing crops
  • The seas provided a way of transportation routes and provided fish for food
  • Large rivers were ideal for trade and mountain streams pushed water wheels

THE GERMATIC KINGDOMS

  • Germanic tribes migrated across Europe
  • They were farmers and herders
  • They had no cities or written laws. Lived in small communities governed by unwritten customs
  • Elected kings that led them to war
  • Warrior nobles swore loyalty for exchange of weapons and loot

THE FRANKS

  • Germanic kingdoms transformed Western Europe into small kingdoms
  • The strongest was the Kingdom of the Franks
  • Clovis who was the king of the franks conquered roman province in Gaul
  • Clovis took an important step when he transfered over to Christianity
  • Clovis gained the peoples support and gained powerful allies in the Christian church in Rome

EUROPE AND THE MUSLIM WORLD

  • New powers emerged in the medditerranean
  • Islam rose in 622 in Arabia
  • Muslim armies crossed to France and Charles Martel gathered Frankish warriors
  • The battle of jours in 732, Christian warriors triumphed. They thought it was a sign of god on their side
  • Christians viewed the Muslim world as hostility when Islams weren't a threat

THE AGE OF CHARLEMAGNE

  • Charlemagne towered over people in his time.
  • He loved to battle.
  • He spent much oh his 46 year reign fighting Muslims in Spain

A CHRISTIAN EMPEROR

  • The pope out a crown on Charlemagne for help against nobles
  • Charlemagne was a success

  • Charlemagne tried to exercise his control
  • He appointed powerful nobles to rule against religion
  • He gave the land so they can offer support to soldiers

  • Charlemagne made his court a second home
  • Charlemagne can read but can't write

  • After Charlemagne died his empire feel apart
  • He left lasting memory's
  • His empire was snapped by Vikings

  • He set up strong governments
