After World War II (1941-45), Joseph W. Mountin, a physician and public health leader, formed a plan to convert the Malaria Control in War Areas office and control infectious diseases. It was founded July 1, 1946 as the successor to the World War II Malaria control in war areas program. Its primary mission to prevent malaria from spreading across the nation.

MISSION / PURPOSE OF CDC

  • Tackling the biggest health problems causing death and disability for Americans
  • Putting science and advanced technology into action to prevent disease
  • Promoting healthy and safe behaviors, communities and environment
  • Developing leaders and training the public health workforce, including disease detectives
  • Taking the health pulse of our nation

CDC manages approximately $1.73 billion in United States Government financial investments to improve health globally and to protect the American people from health and security threats that cross international borders.
