WORLD AT WAR
7/28/1914 - 11/11/1918
Thirty countries were involved in it.
Soldiers fought largely in trenches during the war.
About 116,000 Americans were killed, in about a seven month period.
2.
THE JAZZ AGE
Known also as the "Roaring Twenties."
For the first time more Americans lived in cities.
Time of the prohibition era.
People started to buy many things on credit.
Women finally received the right to vote.

THE GREAT DEPRESSION
Peaked between 1932-1933.
The term skid row came about in this time.
Zippers became widely used because buttons were too expensive.
The U.S. Didn't mint nickels in 32-33 because of slow circulation of money.
Stock market didn't return to pre- depression levels until 1954.

MASS CULTURE
Generated both increased wages for middle class and fabulous profits for wealthy investors.
Most dramatic manifest of backlash was the revival of the KKK
Rapid pace of tech, economic, and cultural changes during the 20s got considerable back lash.

NEW IDEAS
Jazz music and the dance clubs playing it became very popular
Flappers became a trend, or young women especially without decorum.
The movie industry skyrocketed
Large scale use of cars, telephones, motion pictures, etc.
6.
NEW POETRY
Many poets in this time were African American
Lyrical, free verse, etc. became very popular.
Langston Hughes was an extremely popular poet in this time.
7.
THE HARLEM RENAISSANCE
Kindled a new black culture identity.
The publishing industry sought out and published black writers.
Influenced future generations of black writers.
Acquired wider recognition with the advent of the civil rights movement.
