A Brief Guide for Educators

Creative Commons is a non-profit organization that
facilitates using and sharing
creative work online.

How?

  • By providing free, standardized copyright licenses that allow people to use, share, or remix your creative work without having to ask you for permission.
  • Users of work published under CC know exactly what's allowed and what's not.

CC and Copyright

  • CC is not an alternative to traditional copyright.
  • Using a CC license allows you to easily modify copyright to suit your needs.
  • You choose the rights you want!

CC Licenses

  • If you want other people to share, use, or build upon your original work easily, consider publishing it under a CC license.
  • Six different licenses to choose from.

each license addresses:

  • Attribution
  • Commercial use
  • Remixing/derivative work
  • Which rights are passed on to future users

CC takes the guesswork out of copyright and makes online collaboration easier.

Want to use something published under CC? Great! Check the CC license to see what's allowed. Restrictions are clear and easy to understand.

what about fair use?

  • Creative Commons licenses provide preset guidelines and permissions for how creative work can be used.
  • Fair use is the limited use of copyrighted material, with or without permission, under certain circumstances.

But check on the restrictions, look for a CC license, or make sure what you're doing falls under fair use.
