Creative Thinking

  • linear vs conceptual: workers who are creative & have an in depth knowledge of our culture
  • the ability to problem solve creatively diminishes if it is not nurtured
  • the arts sustain creative, innnovative, & playful urges throughout life
  • ongoing involvement in the arts means less opportunity for creativity to slow
  • .
linear vs conceptual:

jobs requiring linear thinking can easily be outsourced

why be involved in the arts if that is not a planned career?

it is not necessarily the end result that is important, but rather the skills that are learned & practiced in order to be successful

Confidence

  • art trains students to deliver messages convincingly & confidently
  • stage performance = public speaking
  • students who do not value their experiences struggle w/future employers
  • students who have put themselves out there are able to project to confindence to future employers

Problem Solving

  • kids stop trying because they don't want to be wrong
  • when negativity is taken out of the equation problems become opportunities to be creative
  • when problems are seen as creative challenges kids won't be discouraged when they arise

Problem Solving

  • playful, creative, problem solving produces motivated, persistent, successful problem solvers
  • total freedom vs enabling constriants
  • artistic creations are born of problem solving-the problem of how to communicate an emotion or idea
giving an assignment with certain challenging parameters actually promotes creativity

free draw vs focused draw

Dreaming Big

  • the arts teach kids how to have an idea & see it through to the end
  • art teaches to push beyond the boundaries of what they think they are capable of
  • kids will not always be successful, but still encouraging them teaches perserverence & dedication
  • balance - dreaming big & hard work

Accountability

  • critique helps understand that feedback should not be personal, but seen as a way to further challenge
  • mistakes are not the end of the world - just apart of the process
  • empathy in critque
empathy in critique - students learn to discuss another students work constructively rather than harshly, offering suggestions rather than put downs.

Communication

  • art improves non-verbal communication
  • emotion can be expressed without a single word

Adaptability

  • problem solving + creativity + confidence + positivity = adaptability
  • art is unpredictable, has multiple "right" answers, allows for improvisation, & is constantly changing
