BATTLE OF BULL RUN

  • It was the first major battle of the Civil War.
  • Shattered the North's hopes in winning.
  • Lincoln kept trying to win.
  • George B. McCellen led 100,000 troops.
  • Then Robert E. Lee led the confederates.

BATTLE OF ANTIETAM

  • It was the bloodiest single-day battle of the Civil War and of U.S history.
  • Confederates were going to attack Harpers Ferry.
  • Lee's troops marched North.
  • The union realized they were going to be attacked.

BATTLE OF SHILOH

  • Each side lost and gained ground.
  • Union reinforcements arrived and helped push the confederates into retreating.

THE SEIGE OF VICKSBURG

  • Lasted 6 weeks.

APPOMATTOX COURTHOUSE

  • On April 9,1865, at the courthouse Lee surrendered to Grant.
  • When he surrendered the bloody war was over.

EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION

  • Lincoln presented the Emancipation Proclamation after the Battle of Antietam.
  • He realized that one way to weaken the South was to free the slaves.
