DAY 1

PURPOSE:

OBSERVE THE EFFECTS ON AN EGG PLACED IN VINEGAR,WATER,AND CORN SYRUP.

MATERIALS:

  • 250 mL beakers (2)
  • Chicken eggs (2)
  • Triple beam balance
  • Safety goggles
  • Lab aprons
  • Measuring tape
  • Vinegar (approximately 400 mL)
  • Plastic wrap (2 medium size pieces)
  • Water (approximately 200 mL)
  • Corn syrup (approximately 200 mL)
  • Marker

HYPOTHESIS:

THE EGG WITH GET LARGER WHEN PLACED IN WATER.THE EGG WILL SHRIBLE/SHRINK WHEN PLACED IN VINEGAR & CORN SYRUP.

EGG MEASUREMENTS DAY 1:

  • BEAKER #1 YOKO=Mass (g)=54.2,circumference (cm)=13cm
  • BEAKER # SHELLY=Mass (g)=58.2,circumference (cm)=14cm

DAY 1 QUESTIONS:

  • WHY DID YOU PLACE EGGS IN VINEGAR?SO it would deteriorate the shell.
  • What will happen to the eggs overnight?The shell will dissolve and the cell will be soft.

OBSERVATIONS DAY 2:

  • Appearance:The eggs were in vinegar.The eggs' shell has deteriorated.
  • Beaker #1/YOKO:Mass (g)=70.3,circumference (cm)=15.5 cm
  • Beaker #2/SHELLY:Mass (g)=78.6,circumference (cm)=17 cm

DAY 2 QUESTIONS:

  • What happened to the mass of the eggs?why do you think this happened?The mass of the eggs changed.It happened because the water went inside the egg and the egg got larger.The corn syrup and vinegar broke down the cell membrane so the egg got smaller.
  • What do you think will happen to the egg in beaker #1?The egg will get larger.
  • What do you think will happen to the egg in beaker #2?The egg will get smaller.

  • Appearance:the eggs are in water and corn syrup.The eggs' shell has deteriorated.
  • Beaker #1/YOKO:Mass (g)=74,Circumference (cm)=15cm
  • Beaker #2/SHELLY:Mass (g)=59.6,Circumference (cm)=13.5cm

DAY 3 QUESTIONS:

  • What happened to the egg in beaker #1? Why do you think this happened?The egg got larger and heavier because the water got inside the egg.
  • What happened to the egg in beaker #2?why do you think this happened?The egg shrunk because the corn syrup broke down the egg.
  • The title of this lab is "osmosis in eggs".Based on that title and what you observed in the eggs,what do you think osmosis means?Diffusion of water.
