Close your eyes and imagine you're at a symphony orchestra performance entranced by classical music. An orchestra is made up of 100 musicians who play a string, woodwind, brass or percussion instrument. A professional musician practices their instrument for 5 hours per day. However, if they don't practice together, it might sound like this ---

Strings

The string section is the largest with 64-68 players. It consists of the Violin, Viola, Cello, and Double Bass. Although they look very similar, the size gives them each a unique sound.

Violin

The violin is the most popular and has the highest pitch. You play it by holding it under your chin with one hand and dragging a bow across it with the other.

Viola

The viola is played the same way a violin is played. Although the viola is very similar to the violin, it has a slightly lower range.

Cello

The cello is played resting on the floor in front of you. It has an even lower range.

Double Bass

Unlike the other string instruments, you stand up while playing the double bass. It is a massive instrument with a very low range.

Woodwinds

Woodwinds consist of a wide variety of instruments, all very long and thin. They are played with both hands on multiple keys. Unlike the stings, they all look and sound very different. Their are only 16 woodwinds in an orchestra.

Flute/Piccolo

The flute and piccolo are the only woodwind instruments played without a reed. The flute has a very soft, high pitched sound.

Clarinet/Bass Clarinet

The clarinet's sound is described as "cat-like." It is played with a single reed. There are many different clarinets including the bass clarinet.

Oboe

The oboe is a difficult instrument played with a double reed. The oboe has a distinct harsh or sweet sound, depending on the song being played.

Bassoon

The bassoon has a bouncy "clown-like" sound. Like the oboe, it is a challenging, double- reeded instrument.

Brass

Brass instruments all sound very bright and they are each played with a mouthpiece.

Trumpet

The trumpet is the smallest, with the highest pitch. They sound very bright and bold.

French Horn

The french horn is the most difficult brass instrument. In an orchestra, they are the most important wind instrument. Their are 6-8 horns in an orchestra.

Trombone

Unlike the rest of the brass, to change notes on the trombone, you move the slide into one of the seven positions. The trombone is a low brass instrument.

Tuba

The tuba is the largest brass instrument with a very low, full sound. There is only one tuba in an orchestra.

Percussion

The percussion section consists of a variety of instruments including, but not limited to the snare drum, bass drum, timpani, and xylophone. They are used to make sound effects.

Untitled Slide

It takes team work to get all 104 members of an orchestra to sound incredible. It pleases the listener to attend a performance. Although it requires so much, the final result is worth it. You have no idea how much team work it takes to make them sound amazing.
