WHAT IS ALPINE TUNDRA?

LOCATED AT ALTITUDES ABOVE 10,000 FEET

ABSOLUTE LOCATION

  • Located between 32 and 60 degrees N latitude.
  • Located between 120 and 160 degrees W longitude.

CLIMATE

IT IS COLD, WINDY, SNOWY AND ICY.

ALPINE

TEMPERATURES GET AS COLD AS -40 DEGREES F.

FLORA

  • The Flora that grows there is fern and flowers.
  • Flora that grow in the alpine tundra have shallow roots.
  • The roots cannot grow deeper than 10 feet.
  • The ground doesn't thaw so the plants grow close to the ground.

POOR SOIL CONDITIONS

  • Flora grows slowly because there is very little carbon dioxide.
  • Plants do not decay fast enough creating poor soil.
  • Flora does not grow tall there.
  • Shrubs and berry bushes are examples of flora.

FAUNA

  • A mammal that lives in the alpine tundra is a grizzly bear.
  • Birds like the rough legged hawk and the snowy owl.
  • Reptiles are not found in the alpine.
  • Army cutworms moths are insects found here.
