A.K.A Sooty Owl

FACTS

  • Endangered species
  • They are known from some of the tallest and wettest regions.
  • There known as Black Owls or Dusky Barn Owls.
  • Very rare
  • Its originally from Australia.

SIZE

  • Medium sized bird
  • Size: Length male 37-43cm, female 44-51cm
  • Weight male 500-700g, female 750-1160g.

DESCRIPTION

  • Both the upper body and the legs are flecked with small white spots.
  • They have a large head, gangly legs with large feet, and short tail
  • Sooty Owls also have huge eyes and a whitish beak.
  • The facial disc is greyish-brown with a dark greyish-brown rim.

BEHAVIOR

  • Strictly Nocturnal. Hides during the daytime in crevices, hollow tree trunks, dense foliage of tall trees, and sometimes caves.
  • The Sooty Owl occurs solitarily, in pairs, or in family groups of parents and offspring.
  • Sleeps during the day
  • Very defensive of there homes

BREEDING

  • Sooty Owls breed in the spring and generally lay two eggs.
  • Usually only one egg hatches.
  • The young will stay in the nest for a little over ten months before fledging.
  • Breeds in trees or caves
  • Usually nest in gullies

DIET

  • Rodents, birds,large insects, lizards
  • Carnivore
  • Male does all the hunting
  • Hunts during the night
  • Only rabbit size

HABITATS

  • inhabits subtropical and warm temperate rainforest
  • Gullies for preys
  • Hollow tree trunks
