  • The communist side wanted to take over the rest
  • North wanted Vietnam to all be communist

  • Fell to North in April 30th
  • Marked end of the War

GULF OF TONKIN RESLOUTION

  • Gave congressional approval to expand in the war
  • LBJ feared public wouldn't like the expansion
  • Northern troops had control over half of the South
  • LBJ gets critiqued for not acting faster
  • August 7, 1964

MY LAI MASSACRE

  • March 16, 1968
  • US troops enter My Lai village
  • Told to search and destroy
  • Turned into the massacre of 300 unarmed civilians
  • Didn't reach US until November, and was heavily investigated

NGO DINH ASSASINATED

  • November 2, 1963
  • US had helped south, and 16,000 men were there
  • Troops began to be massacred
  • NGO was killed in Ho Chi Minh City
  • Was killed after he tried to make a republic of Vietnam

  • Attacked North Vietnam
  • From March 1965- October 1968
  • Strategic bombing campaign
  • First sustained US assault on North
  • Was a way to lessen the Northern troops

KENT STATE INCCIDENT

  • Members of Ohio National Guard fired into crowd
  • Killing 4, and wounding 9 kent students
  • May 4, 1970
  • Sparked nation wide student strikes
  • Began to impact the Nation wide Politics

US INVADES CAMBODIA

  • April 30, 1970
  • US and South Vietnam invade
  • Invaded in order to bomb
  • And destroy cong. Base camps
  • Nixon aired on TV his plans publicly

GENEVA ACCORDS

  • Temporarily divided Vietnam into north and south
  • Along 17th parallel
  • Communists in the the Northern part
  • Anti-Communists in Southern part
  • Election in 1956 to unify them

  • November 22, 1963
  • He was visiting in Dallas, TX
  • Riding through the streets on a motorcar
  • Killed by Lee Harvey Oswald

TET OFFENSIVE

  • Viet cong. Launched attack
  • Used weapon filled coffins
  • West got more land
  • Called defeat for Viet cong.

JACKSON STATE COLLEGE

  • 11 days after kent shooting
  • 100 black students rallied about white motorists
  • Police arrive and start to shoot at the group
  • 2 killed, and 9 wounded

  • Elected in 1968
  • Made political comeback
  • Promised to restore law and order

AMERICAN TROOPS LEAVE VIETNAM

  • March 29, 1973
  • Last of US troops left Vietnam
  • Departure was to Paris Peace Accords
  • US, North and South Vietnam signed 2 months earlier
  • Released American prisoners of war

¿QUESTIONS?

  • US shouldn't have
  • To an extent no but, you also don't want another holocaust
  • We really didn't, considering the number of troops died
  • Maybe we could have gotten other countries to help not just us.
