VINCENT VAN GOGH

BACKGROUND

• He was born on March 30,1853
• His parents were Reverend Theodorus Van Gogh and Amelia Carbentus.
• Named after grandfather and older brother who passed away .
• He had many siblings.

EARLY LIFE

• He was silent and always very thoughtful.
• He wanted to be a pastor in the Dutch Reformed Church.
• He suffered from temporal lobe epilepsy, hallucinations and mental illness.
• He was close to Paul Gauguin( became another famous artist)
• Wrote over 800 letters in his life to friends and family but mostly his brother Theo.

PAINTING LIFE

• He was really poor so he started off by painting peasants and landscapes.
• He didn't have much romance in his life to influence him to paint.
• He was self taught with little experience.
• He created 2000 painting
• His brother Theo gave him the money to support his painting .

HIS PAINTINGS.

• He basically just painted the landscapes and a lot of flowers.
• It just took him about 10 years to make 900 painting.
• He is a Dutch Post - Impressionist
• He only sold about 1 painting his entire life . ( Red Vineyard)
• He only attended art school once but that was just years before his death .

HIS SAD MOMENTS

• He cut his own ear off after an epileptic attack.
• Suffered a lot with his disorders that it sometimes affected his paintings.
• Painted at least 37 self portraits .
• His insanity drove him to kill himself .
• He didn't become famous until after his death .

HIS MOST FAMOUS PAINTING

• Starry Night
• 1889
• Saint Remy de Provience in France
• He was in a asylum when this was painted

HIS DEATH

DEATH

• He shot himself and died two days later.
• He was only 37.
• He died in France .
• His last words were " the sadness will last forever "
• Due to his brothers wife , Vincent became famous 11 years after his death.

BECAME FAMOUS AFTER DEATH

• He was very famous for his painting afterwards.
• His paintings are still famous now in present day
• He is among the great artist that are remembered.
• "If you hear a voice within you say 'you cannot paint,' then by all means paint,
• and that voice will be silenced."
